Flora of manipur

Manipur boasts a rich variety of plant life due to its diverse climatic zones, ranging from subtropical to temperate forests. These forests are home to a number of rare and unique species.

1. Forests

  • Tropical and Subtropical Forests: These forests are found in the lowland regions of Manipur and support a range of tropical hardwood trees, including Sal (Shorea robusta), Teak (Tectona grandis), and Bamboo species.
  • Temperate Forests: As the altitude rises, the vegetation changes to temperate forests, which are rich in oak (Quercus species), pine (Pinus), and cedar (Deodar).
  • Montane Forests: In the higher reaches, the montane forests are home to various conifers, including blue pine (Pinus wallichiana) and fir trees, and temperate broad-leaved species like cherry and rhododendrons.

2. Notable Plants

  • Manipur Orchid (Dendrobium manipurense): This species of orchid is native to the state and is an important part of the state’s floristic heritage.
  • Loktak Lake Vegetation: The famous floating islands of Loktak Lake are covered in aquatic plants such as water lilies and phumdis (floating vegetation), which form a unique ecosystem.
  • Medicinal Plants: Manipur is also known for its variety of medicinal plants like Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Aloe Vera, used in traditional healing practices by the local communities.

3. Endemic Plants

  • Chak-hao (Manipur Black Rice): A unique variety of black rice that is grown in the state and has a rich history in the local diet.
  • Eryngium manipurensis: A species of flowering plant endemic to the region, found in high-altitude areas.

Founa of Manipur

1. Mammals

  • Sangai (Manipur Deer): The Sangai, also known as the Manipur Brow-antlered Deer, is the state animal of Manipur. This endangered deer species is found primarily in the Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park.
  • Hoolock Gibbons: The Hoolock Gibbon, India’s only ape species, is found in the forests of Manipur, particularly in the Mao area.
  • Tigers and Leopards: Manipur is home to both the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Indian Leopard, although their populations are limited and primarily confined to protected areas.
  • Wild Boar and Civets: Wild boars, civets, and other small mammals are also present in the forests of the state.

2. Birds

  • Manipur Bush Quail: An endemic species, this quail is found in the dry grasslands of Manipur.
  • Pallas’s Fish Eagle: The wetlands of Loktak Lake are home to this large, majestic eagle, which feeds primarily on fish.
  • Kalij Pheasant: A species of pheasant native to the state and found in the forested hills of Manipur.

5. Endangered Species
